Welcome to Gemstone Coaching!
Thank you for visiting us!
Here’s a little more about what we do. If you have questions, feel free to contact me at grace@gemstonecoaching.com.
Do you know anyone who: (or maybe do you:)
- Is afraid to try something new?
- Calls themselves stupid?
- Beats themselves up?
- Won’t forgive themselves for a mistake they made?
- Is really bored or unhappy in their job, but won’t do anything about finding a new one?
- Keeps doing the same thing over and over, but hopes for different results?
They might be the victim of their Inner Bully.
What’s an Inner Bully, you might ask?
It’s that voice, that little nagging, annoying voice in the back of your head that tells you
- I can’t
- I don’t deserve that
- I’m not good enough
- Who do I think I am to want ______ ( fill in the blank)?
Sometimes we don’t recognize how that voice keeps us from doing the things we want to do, or having the life that we want to have.
Our Inner Bully can show up in different ways: Comparing (I’m not as good/smart/pretty/etc. as that person), Negative self-talk or name calling (I’m so stupid, or I’ll never be skinny), Perfectionism (I have to do things just right, or it’s not good enough), just to name a few.
In the schoolyard, bullies are liars (think Lucy promising not to, then pulling the football away from Charlie Brown). Bullies are about keeping you in fear and keeping you doing what they want you to do so they can be in control. But bullies can’t back up their statements, so if we provide evidence to the contrary, they have to back down. An Inner Bully might think it is trying to keep you safe, but it’s just doing a really bad job of it.
The cool thing is that the Inner Bully is NOT part of who we are – it’s an amalgamation of external voices that we’ve picked up along the way in life.
We are not born with “I can’t”!
If we were, we’d never learn to walk, right?
In the past year, I’ve been focusing on helping people stand up to their Inner Bully. What I do is help people to recognize that Inner Bully voice and where it shows up in different areas in their lives, to stand up to it, and replace it with more positive influences.
Keep checking back for future blog posts and more information. I’ll be sharing insights and tidbits about standing up to your Inner Bully. Hopefully, we can take this journey together!
